The Power To Choose
August 25, 2003

Dear Doctor,

If you’d enjoy a stirring character study in young leadership and determination, see the movie “Whale Rider.” Set in New Zealand, it’s about a proud tribal heritage and a family that fights through bereavement and discrimination to evolve and prosper.

It’s the story of a patriarch of a Maori community, expecting his son’s wife to provide a male heir for the family lineage to continue. She dies in childbirth, delivering a stillborn son and a twin daughter who survived. In their culture, the females were not permitted to be leaders of the community, so the little girl’s talents were ignored while the patriarch auditioned and trained other young boys for assuming the role. She clearly outperforms them all, alienating him even more, but she eventually proves herself to the community and to her grandfather, paving the way for their lineage of leadership to continue and for women to take their rightful place among those leaders.

It’s an emotionally gripping tale, beautifully acted and filmed, and clearly makes the point that it is costly to adhere to rules and traditions at the expense of a more objective assessment and utilization of the resources available. Einstein told us that you can never solve a problem with the same level of thinking that caused it — you must create a new reality where the problem no longer exists. Emerson says “foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” It is through our very birthright as humans — the power to choose — that we explore what is really possible when we are released from the shackles of previous thought and convention.

Larry Markson tells us about the “MFTP” — the mothers, fathers, teachers and preachers who are responsible for contributing to the bulk of our belief structure. Well-intentioned as they may have been, our influences from the past, especially from early in our lives, gave us a series of rules and traditions that we may be unwittingly carrying out to this day without ever really challenging any of it.

If your particular belief structure is sound, it will hold up against any scrutiny, so be willing to look at it, and retain that which serves you well, while upgrading or refining that which requires it.

In “Whale Rider,” a twelve year old girl takes on tribal history and proves herself worthy. Now, chiropractors are moving into position, after a long persecution, to take more responsibility in leading our society to wellness. Are you prepared? Do you feel that you can articulate your message clearly and effectively, and are you a good example of that message? Are you ready to represent what you stand for? Faith without works is heresy — your actions will always speak louder than your words. Examine your standards, and make sure you have selected them to be consistent with your highest self and your best performance — those are the rules that count the most.
