A Precocious Youngster Shows Us How It's Done
February 17, 2004

Yes, it’s true that consultants have to be problem solvers, coaches, leaders, teachers, psychologists, guardian angels, and deal with a whole host of other "all things to all people" situations — but once in a while, we get to just sit back and enjoy a little slice of life that comes out of nowhere to remind us why we work so hard, and how good it can be.

Last week, Dr. Elisa Zinberg, highly respected Masters Circle consultant and presenter, told me the following story about one of our esteemed Winners Circle members, Dr. Kanella Mathioudis of Belvidere IL.

It seems that the front desk CA at Dr. Kanella’s office was suddenly unavailable, and she was stuck for an assistant — having exhausted her options, she had no other recourse than to put her 10 year old daughter, Eleanna, in the position, to answer the phone, make appointments, and transact whatever business she could. What happened next is one for the ages!

An outstanding Masters Circle member with a busy practice, Dr. Kanella apparently applies what she has learned about success to her parenting as well, building up her children in strong and noble thought, and encouraging them to express themselves effectively. So, it should come as no surprise that in her role as fill-in front desk CA, Eleanna was able to schedule 2 new patients, and throughout the day, pick up ten additional visits, a sure sign of the positive energy and attractability she brought to the job.

But the icing on the cake came when one of the patients had a balance on his account — Eleanna calmly and professionally asked, "Do you want to put $50 toward that, or would you like to pay the entire bill?" Disarmed, the patient paid the entire balance.

The patient made his way back to the adjusting area, sputtering to Dr. Kanella, "Your daughter just got $175 out of me!"

This anecdote is so rich — first, what an amazing statement about self image and certainty in a child, and what a comment about the quality of the parenting that generates such congruency! Second, what does it say about the confrontational tolerance of most front desk assistants, compared to this level of assertiveness coming from a ten year old? And finally, look at the vibration of attraction demonstrated by this special young lady — new patients, visits building throughout the day, and money flying at her — this little glimpse into real-life practice exemplifies what we teach — that success comes from you, not to you, and that who you are determines how well what you do works.

Could it really be that easy? Why not ask a ten year old and see — but pick a ten year old who has a role model like Kanella Mathioudis — and then sit back and watch magic happen.
