Advanced Citizenry & The Support Of Worthy Causes
March 22, 2004

Dear Doctor:

A hearty “Thank you” to the doctors who responded to last week’s plea for contributions for Life University – your generosity will be felt by future generations of chiropractors, and will come back to you many times over.

You may be wondering why this column, which has traditionally steered clear of politics, is suddenly addressing current events. This is a critical time in our history, where decisions are being made and policies being set that affect chiropractic’s position in the marketplace going forward, so it is important that the profession’s many voices be heard by our leaders. My intention is to encourage the thousands of chiropractors who read this column each week to weigh in on contemporary issues.

Notice that these causes are chosen on merit, not along political party lines – whether it’s the survival of Life U or the support of the ACA’s lawsuits, there are situations worthy of your energies and your dollars, that even an old anarchist like me feels are significant. That’s why I ask you to step up and be counted, on behalf of chiropractic, not any particular special interest.

That’s the difference between being a politician and an advanced citizen. The politician chooses a position based on party lines, and the advanced citizen chooses worthy causes to support. If you believe in preserving chiropractic as a separate and distinct healing art, maintaining our terminology and retaining our unique role in the care of the spine and nerve system, then you will seek out those who champion these causes and find ways to help them succeed.

Being an advanced citizen in chiropractic means more than just giving money. Your time, your thoughts and your perspectives are a valuable part of the matrix of chiropractic consciousness – by making your feelings known, you shape the health and wellness of our descendants. Your ideas are more important than you may realize, so please participate in your local, state and national organizations, as well as consulting groups and smaller masterminds, and add to the process with your own individual slant. The more chiropractors that do this, the more we’ll develop an accurate representation of what we really want as a profession, instead of a biased viewpoint by a well-intentioned minority. You are the silent majority of chiropractic, and it’s time for you to speak up.

And don’t limit your efforts to chiropractic organizations – we need more chiropractors serving on school boards, as elected officials and in positions of authority. Each of us has a sphere of influence, a circle of friends and acquaintances who need to hear the chiropractic message, for themselves and those they care about – that’s part of advanced citizenry, too, a willingness to spread the word, which by the way also builds your practice, win-win.

Think about how you and your team could have more impact. Whether you work at the grass roots level by introducing people to the miraculous healing benefits chiropractic is famous for, or whether you assume a leadership role in your community and in professional organizations, please take your share of the responsibility for moving chiropractic ahead. If we all invest our own special something, the net effect will be an honest, complete, and fulfilling delivery of chiropractic services to an eager and appreciative health care consumer.
