Keeping our principles intact
May 17, 2004

Dear Doctor:

I received this meaningful quotation from excellent Masters Circle Member John J. Collins DC of Newberg, OR. Its application in our everyday practice will serve as a valuable reference through chiropractic’s maturation in the years ahead.

Here is the quote -- Victor Hugo said, “Change your opinions, keep to your principles. Change your leaves, keep intact your roots.”

The reason this thought struck me is because it points out a fundamental belief that contributes to the long term success of any company or institution, as described in the landmark business book “Built To Last,” authored, ironically, by James C., not John J., Collins. Collins states that, “In order to meet the challenges of a changing world, it must be prepared to change everything about itself except its basic beliefs.” He further states that, “a visionary company carefully preserves and protects its core ideology, yet all the specific manifestations of its core ideology must be open for change and evolution.” To me, this means that in order for chiropractic to continue thriving in the new millennium, we must hold to our basic principles, yet be willing to investigate new ways of delivering our services.

This brings up an interesting discussion – if we accept that the correction of the vertebral subluxation is at the core of chiropractic principle, that healing comes from within and that our job is to remove any obstacles to that inner-directed healing, as is stated in every significant document recognized as shaping chiropractic ideology, then doesn’t it behoove chiropractors to preserve this core ideology as they explore ever-improving ways to provide this vital service?

Innovations in adjusting technique, creative payment options and well-conceived marketing, patient education and public relations efforts are tools of progress that can be reconfigured around the basics of chiropractic philosophy – but without the underpinnings of natural healing and freedom from nerve interference supporting those novel strategies, the likelihood of long term success is reduced.

That’s why it’s so critical for you to promote the importance of being checked for subluxation to your constituency, no matter what else you do. If you want to practice a diversified or interdisciplinary style, that’s up to you, but the principles of chiropractic must being felt in everything you offer your patients, so they can contribute to the energy and group consciousness required to broaden chiropractic’s market segment and enhance its appeal to a wider spectrum of health care consumers.

When I was in practice, I changed and added to my technical approach and office procedures throughout my career, and I urge you to do the same, so you evolve into the best you possible. But while you may change your leaves, keep your roots intact – it will come back to reward you, and to establish chiropractic’s rightful place in the development of the wellness lifestyle. It is this philosophical foundation that separates us from the allopathic, outside-in system of health care that has failed our society so miserably – please remember what makes us different and special, and maintain our uniqueness, even while you explore the future opportunities that lie before you.
