Dear Doctor:
Your patients are waiting for a leader to show up. They are more available than ever to hear your message of wellness, but they are unimpressed by obscure talk and half-hearted efforts. They want a fully engaged wellness provider to take them by the hand and reveal the secrets of longevity and quality of life to them. Are you that leader?
There has never been a better time to be a chiropractor. Opportunity abounds – people are willing to spend their time and their discretionary dollars on anything that moves them in the direction of fulfillment – what are you waiting for?
Tell them your truth – not everyone will relate, but who said that’s necessary? Don’t try to be all things to all people, just be the best you, and you’ll attract the right people. Clarify and focus – who are you as a healer, as a professional, as a chiropractor? What do you stand for? What are your values, your beliefs, your principles, your ideals? What is the point of someone coming to your office and partaking of your services?
If you don’t have it clear in your mind why people should come to you, then they won’t either. This is an incredible time for a savvy health entrepreneur – you can step up and guide those in your sphere of influence to a better life, to more happiness, to less pain and a deeper understanding of healing and wellness. Or, you can push their bones into place and help them feel better. It’s your choice, you assign the meaning to what you do, and the impact you have on your patients and your marketplace depends on it.
Be prepared to communicate your purpose, not only in glib platitudes, but by your example – look the part, act the part, be wellness personified, and your presence will speak so loudly it won’t matter what you say. Help your constituents by representing what you teach, and show them the way through your own lifestyle and commitment.
Notice, I haven’t defined for you what to communicate – that is up to you, and will blossom from your own congruent behaviors into a life and practice philosophy that serves you and inspires others. Be yourself -- it is one of the great strengths of our profession that there is so much diversity, so anyone can find a chiropractor they can connect with. But you must seize the responsibility at hand – you can make a profound difference in many lives, if you will only become the leader your practice is waiting for.
