Dear Doctor:
It isn’t crazy enough that we have to be concerned about suicide bombers, medications causing more problems than they solve, and the moral fabric of corporate America eroding – now there are hundred foot waves killing people by the tens of thousands. If I had a different kind of personality, I could start to get a little nervous.
While these events are no joking matter, it does bring up an important point to build on, to begin this new year – in a world that moves as fast as this one seems to, we have to be willing to stay light on our feet, to be ready for anything. While our core values may remain the same, the strategies for pursuing them will vary greatly as conditions change, and it sure seems likely that conditions will continue to change.
As the rate of life increases, those who learn to move faster will have a significant advantage. New information is flooding the marketplace at a record pace, and those who discover new ways to apply it will make the most progress in the shortest amount of time -- and in 2005, that is a winner’s edge.
How can you capitalize on this trend? First, get clear about your outcome, to establish what you want to accomplish. Next, set yourself in an empowered state, so you have the resources you need when you are ready to take action. Then, size up the situation quickly, pull the trigger, and go until – if you linger, you may find your window closing. Proactivity has become one of the calling cards of the great, so keep it in mind before you drag your feet on any of your big decisions this year. Declare, and go for it!
This is a simple enough formula, and it will work regardless of the ethics behind it – ironically, the process of success is available to all who study and implement the rules. And therein lies the rub – can our society, and we chiropractors in particular, construct an ethical foundation that moves the world in the direction of peace, love and kindness, or will greed, self-importance and power be the cornerstones of the coming era?
Each of us has a responsibility to examine this issue, and decide where we stand. Let the forces of good come to the forefront, and do your part to contribute to a culture that has an opportunity to change the world for the better. Pick things to do that serve the greater good – and do them, right now!
