Embracing the Inside Out Philosophy
July 11, 2005

Dear Doctor:

The controversy over additives to vaccines or dangerous side effects from popular medications is only the tip of the iceberg. It isn’t just the relationship between mercury and autism, or the battle to prevent drug companies from selling products they know are unsafe. It’s the misguidedness of orienting the organizing principles of health care from the outside in, suggesting that because the body is subject to invasion by outside forces, we must fight those forces with outside agents like drugs and surgery.

While Pasteur’s final words should have been testimony enough, those of us who have been studying wellness have come to the conclusion that, while outside forces may play a role, the organizing principles of health care should be constructed from inside out – the body works well on its own, and defends itself effectively from external influences, within reason, unless something inside the inner workings of the body isn’t functioning as it should – so, self-regulation and self-healing should be the centerpiece of a doctor’s philosophy, and every effort should be made to support, and if necessary intervene to adjust, that self-maintaining mechanism.

It’s easy to see the role that the nerve system plays in this, as well as proper nutrition and the right balance of exercise and rest – and it’s just common sense that a positive attitude will help to create an environment that is most conducive to wellness. This may seem like a simple formula, but the impact and power really start beyond consistent implementation, with the integration of a new, vitalistic identity – it’s not about going on a diet, it’s about custom-tailoring your lifestyle so your typical way of eating is beneficial to you. It isn’t just getting on an exercise program, it’s using your body right so it stays in optimal working order. It isn’t just about getting your nerve interference reduced, it’s about tuning your body’s control center so it performs at peak efficiency.

A paradigm shift around the organizing principles of wellness will have a profound effect on our culture – and it is already underway. What are you doing to participate and spread the word? Do you recognize and act on opportunities to educate people, with dignity and professionalism? Can you explain what you do in terms people can relate to and understand? When it comes down to it, would you go to you, would you choose you as a chiropractor and wellness advisor, based on how you present yourself?

Remember, when you are willing to be part of the solution, you don’t only build your practice, you make a significant contribution to the future of your community.
