Dear Doctor:
Last week, after the London bombings, fellow online columnist and outstanding chiropractic leader Dr. Kevin Donka posted a passage, written by his then nine year old daughter Mariah a year after 9/11, simply entitled “Remembering September 11th.” Here are some excerpts from this precocious and significant work.
“My Mom and Dad are always telling my brothers and sisters and me that everything happens for a reason, and sometimes only God knows what the reason is. But I think if we look hard enough, sometimes we can figure it out.
I remember people last year were saying that the people who did the attack were very bad, and I also remember telling my Mom and Dad that I don’t think there are any really bad people. They just totally forgot who they were and that they have God’s light inside of them too. My Dad always tells us that every acorn has an oak tree inside of it waiting to come out. I think we are like acorns too! We have our good light from God inside of us waiting to come out. But sometimes people forget that. I think we should remember that for them when they forget.
Our country remembered our light by sticking together and helping each other out and putting out our American flags after the towers fell. But we only remembered how strong our light makes us. Some people remembered the loving part of their light by helping people who were hurt or lost someone. But they forgot to remember that part of their light when they thought about the people who did the attacks.
I know it’s very hard to remember that about someone who has done very bad things. But if we don’t remember, how will they ever remember themselves and get better?
I think if we wanted to, we could use September 11th every year to celebrate the time everybody started remembering their light and everyone else’s light. That’s what I’m going to do. I think that if you do that too and then lots of people do it, and every year more people do it, then the people who do bad things will remember it about themselves too. And then we’ll be in a world where that kind of thing probably won’t happen again.”
How did she get so smart so young? If only we could convey this simple message to our decision makers, the world would rapidly progress and evolve. If this is an example of the creed of the Donka family, then we should all take a lesson in self esteem, in child-rearing, in universal philosophy, and in unconditional love.
