Dear Doctor:
Well, we certainly got a glimpse of Nature’s fury, in the form of Katrina, a name that used to conjure up wooden-shoed damsels in frilly dresses serving lager – now, it means sludge, homeless people, massive inconvenience, and death, lots of death.
Sorry to get weird on you, but I’ve come to look at natural disasters like this as a demonstration of the awesome power of natural forces. It’s unsettling to think that at any moment, some confluence of vectors of natural energy could align to manifest such devastation. Yet, to me, the real challenge is… how do we act in harmony with Nature?
While most people’s thoughts are on recovery, I have to confess mine drift to the incomprehensible magnitude of a storm that can disappear a city – a wind that blows twice as fast as I can drive – a flood so deep that it forces people up into their attics to avoid the rising waters. The potential for destruction is overwhelming.
Such a gigantic force – if it wanted us dead, we would be. The logic of this is clear -- either there is abject randomness, and the application of such power is a complete crapshoot, with no rhyme or reason – or, there is a fine order, a perfection that it eludes our level of understanding, rendering it invisible or at least intangible to mere mortals.
I prefer the latter – the thought that everything in the universe is simply a probability is a drab and listless interpretation of things natural. Rather, if we can learn to see the divine order to things, then maybe the brutal strength we have witnessed is not designed to victimize us, but to enhance, enrich and enable us, if we can only see how.
Harnessing the infinite power of universal forces is a daunting task, but lying in wait of imminent annihilation is worse. I’m not suggesting that we try to dominate the weather – what I’m really saying is that there are many ways we can learn to act in concert with Nature, and instead of doing battle, perhaps we can blend these powers into humanity and implement every opportunity to grow, improve, and make our world a better place.
Cosmic reminders like Katrina keep us humble, and reconnect us with something greater, that is available for our use if we only remember how. I believe that chiropractic is one of the major clues to this mystery, and that’s why it’s worth it to continually explore the world of healing -- because it provides information and perspective that will ultimately help us crack the code of our own existence.
