Dear Doctor:
There’s always plenty to be happy about – but once in a while, you get the gift of one of those rare magical moments, the kind you take with you forever.
On Friday night, Jeremy, the eldest of our three sons, and his lovely and delightful significant other, Vanessa, came to our home, to announce their engagement.
Through the laughter and tears of joy, we managed to get an idea of the sequence of events – Jeremy looked for months for the right ring, properly symbolic of his love… at just the right instant, as they walked by the water, he chose the perfect Northport setting to kneel and pop the question… time stood still, a snapshot to remember for all eternity.
Regina and I looked at each other, after thirty-five years together, more in love every day. Will the circle be unbroken? I recalled a Hawaiian wedding ritual I once attended, where the bride and groom look backward through history at their ancestors, to connect and for advice. Then they look forward at future generations, promising to be role models supporting their ultimate success and fulfillment.
I imagined Jeremy and Vanessa looking backward, seeing us and Vanessa’s parents, together three decades or more, and our parents, married five and six decades and more, and the grandparents, almost seven decades together, a lineage of extraordinary sturdiness – then I imagined them looking forward at their descendants, healthier and more well because of the wellness revolution, regular chiropractic, good nutrition and an abundant psychology of living, leading to greater longevity and enhanced quality of life.
It’s more than a pleasant daydream. As new generations learn a better lifestyle and decide to settle for nothing less than the truth, society accelerates its paradigm shift.
That’s why it’s so important that you exemplify your highest ideals, and inspire your children to follow in your footsteps. The snowballing effect of “paying it forward” in this way creates the best possible world. And make no mistake – your children are watching, and so are the children in your practice. They are imprinting their own version of reality – are you making the best use of your opportunity to contribute to their lives?
Vanessa has been coming over to our house since she was a bright and pretty little twelve year old, always standing out to us as the pick of the litter – now, these two young people will continue to build on a foundation of love and gratitude, and add their own unique twist to the group consciousness, as a couple, not just as two individuals. I can’t think of anything more timeless and romantic, an ideal Thanksgiving present. Jeremy and Vanessa, we wish you the very best life has to offer!
