Dear Doctor:
You’ve probably heard the expression “proper planning prevents poor performance.” As this year wraps up and you finish strong, you have a great opportunity to hit the ground running in 2006 by preparing well at both the “be” and “do” levels.
We’ve already discussed that your goals should be written by October 1 each year, and while many people do indeed follow through on this habit, some wait until the last minute – well, the last minute is coming! Don’t be one who halfheartedly slams a few numbers down on a page and passes that off as intelligent goal setting. Formulating your objectives clearly in your mind is one of the key common denominators of all success systems. What are you waiting for? Visualize, crystallize, imagine 2006 going exactly as you would hope for – what does it look like?
Make the extra time and invest the extra effort to get certain about what you want. It will make the next phases of this process easier and more productive.
Now, take your mental images and transcribe them to paper. No excuses – this step causes you to clarify and focus on the details of excellence. Most of our minds are too cluttered to ignore the importance of this step – write it down!
Next, consider how you have to show up to manifest this wonderful outcome. Do you need to build yourself up in some way, with more confidence, more precision, more drive, or more enthusiasm? Raise your standards, don’t let yourself off the hook, and use the vast array of available tools to take your game to the required level.
Once you have defined your goals in writing and outlined the inner work you must do to follow through, construct a plan, complete with all the action steps you’d need to make your dream real. Get this done as soon as possible, so your mind has a chance to cook these procedures – that way, when you actually take action, you’ll feel comfortable with yourself and your chosen path, and develop more momentum earlier in the process.
This kind of preparation separates those who are truly serious about accomplishing their goals from those who talk but fall short – which category are you in? Follow these simple guidelines, and your chances for success will skyrocket. After all, it’s for you – isn’t it worth bringing everything to the table and breaking through to another realm of practice and life? Your actions will demonstrate your answer to this critical question.
