Recent OTC Drug Recalls Are the Tip of The Iceberg
February 6, 2006

Dear Doctor:

My lovely wife Regina forwarded me an email about the FDA’s ban on all products containing phenylpropanolamine (PPA). Linked to hemorrhagic stroke in women and children, it is commonly found in over the counter products like most popular appetite suppressants, decongestants and cold medications, and children’s cold relief remedies.

I mentioned to her that it was good that they were recalling these dangerous drugs, and she wondered if this was an attempt to eliminate lower cost and freely available alternatives, and in doing so, drive people into their doctors’ offices for expensive visits and even more expensive prescription drugs. Now I was confused – which was worse?

I think you can see that, as my esteemed partner Dr. Hoffman says, there’s no good answer to a bad question. As long as people believe that health comes from outside, they will seek external influences however they have to. Until people realize that health and wellness are an expression of inner balance and harmony, and finally accept their responsibility to cultivate their own gardens, there will be a succession of health fads that rise and fall, ultimately ending up on the scrap heap with all the other miracle cures.

There are no miracle cures – the cure is the miracle, the miracle of inner-directed living and an infinitely adaptable mind and body, the condition we refer to as health, a result of the chiropractic wellness lifestyle, and acting consistently with our highest purpose.

It would certainly be simpler if we could control and legislate our way to a well society, but like other natural processes, it must come from the inside out. The way to address the world-wide dependence on drugs and other invasive approaches is to shift the paradigm of thinking toward a deeper understanding of the way things really work – that chemical balance is best maintained by respecting the body’s mechanisms instead of commandeering them, and that we have an inherent tendency toward homeostasis, if the healers-in-charge would only notice and work with it. This is the only way to heal the health care delivery system – so share your opinion, and let’s increase public awareness of this crucial factor in our own well being. If it is to be, it is up to we.
