Dear Doctor:
A new year, a fresh slate – with your goals firmly in place, you should be
revved up and ready to get to it. They say well begun is half won – how will you
make this a January to remember?
What bold action steps can you take right now that would propel your first
month’s performance into uncharted territory? Not just your stats, but how can
you show up differently and better than ever before? What quality or
characteristic could use some resource-building? What adversity could you handle
skillfully, what common occurrence could you approach with enthusiasm and
determination?
You have been running consistent patterns of behavior throughout your typical
daily responses to life and practice, whether or not you are aware of it – look
at those patterns, are they working? What is one key element you realize you
could improve upon, and what specifically would you have to do to make that
shift now? What’s one habit you could work at changing? What’s one weaker area
you could concentrate on that would elevate your performance to a new level, or
enhance your growth?
Even deeper, are you clear on your purpose, and are your various missions
outgrowths of that purpose? Are your personal philosophies and code of ethics
articulated and accessible to you at all times? Are your values and beliefs in
alignment? Have you put in the legwork to establish the certainty and presence
you need? Are you grateful enough, loving enough, willing enough?
Questions like these are sparks that ignite your passion and your talent, and
that combustion will help you to blaze new trails and re-invent yourself, an
opportunity all high achievers recognize and relish. The status quo doesn’t
serve you past a certain point, because the world moves too fast for that these
days, someone or something is bound to move your cheese – what do you have to do
to keep up, not just to stay where you are, but to move forward?
Could there be something you need to work on at the “do” level that would
streamline or accelerate your development? Are there some procedural systems you
know you need to install or upgrade? Does your health care class need sprucing
up? How about your daily patient education process? Has your report of findings
lost something? Is your adjusting not as crisp and inspired as it could be? A
quick and honest self-assessment will uncover places you may have slipped a bit
– or if not, places you can tweak to add to your overall game. The best among us
are always looking for ways to get better – and this is a great time to kick it
into a higher gear, right here, right now.
Don’t cheat yourself by coasting through the winter – button up if necessary,
but this is your first chance to make the statement that you are serious about
success in 2008. You have a blank canvas before you, aching for your creativity
to paint a masterpiece. No one but you can forge this path, and no one but you
will know if you brought everything you got – but you will know, and that’s what
really counts. Raise your standards, live by your principles, and let your
actions speak for themselves.
