Dear Doctor,
In an unprecedented upset, the underdog New York Giants defeated the heavily
favored New England Patriots in a vivid reminder of why they play these games in
the first place – sometimes the other guys win, and so the Quest for Perfection
ended yesterday in Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz.
Few gave the Giants a legitimate chance against the powerhouse Pats, undefeated
through the first eighteen games of the season for the first time ever. With
all-time quarterback Tom Brady at the helm and top-five-coach-ever Bill
Belichick calling the shots, the New England team was poised on the brink of
eternity, with only the Giants standing between them and football immortality,
as the first team ever to go 19-0. But without a Super Bowl victory at the
climax of their historic run, it would all be for naught, and the commentators
figured that based on the experience of the three-time champion Patriots, they
would find a way to turn back the peaking New Yorkers, who were on a
record-breaking run of their own with ten consecutive road wins.
The surprise victory means all that much more to the frustrated New York sports
fan, facing a Boston dynasty in baseball, football and basketball – but this was
a turning point week for New York in the rivalry with Boston, not only because
the Giants are now Super Bowl Champions instead of the Patriots, but it sets the
stage for high drama as the Yankees try to reclaim the crown from the Red Sox. I
smell an epic battle in the making, and the momentum just swung New York’s way!
The lesson to be learned from all of this is that when you are tested through
adversity and against all odds, you must retain the expectation that you can get
through it, that you can win, that there’s always a way, as come-from-nowhere
winners like the Giants illustrate. Through a clear vision of the possibilities,
a supportive belief structure that establishes an inner environment that is
conducive to success no matter what the circumstances, and a plan that is
carried out with effective and productive systems and a great work ethic, the
tables can be turned and you can create success out of even the humblest
beginnings and most difficult conditions.
What challenge lies before you that may have seemed insurmountable without
inspiration like this? Where can you shift your attitude so you can fully engage
the opportunities life is bringing you to break through? Where can you garner
the satisfaction of winning when no one thinks you will, bringing your own
special flair, enjoying the process and emerging triumphant? Remember, winning
doesn’t have to be at someone else’s expense like in a sporting event, with
winners and losers – you can win the game of life or practice by defining your
objectives and pursuing them with honor, optimism, congruency and passion,
investing your best resources and being resilient and persistent enough to
follow through. That’s how all champions get to the top.
Congratulations to both teams and their fans, for this was one of the best games
in history, and while I’m thrilled because my home team won, I respect the
awesome effort of each team in reaching this level of play. If you want to seek
your potential, take a page out of the book of these great champs, have the self
esteem to believe you can be the best, and show up big when your big moment
comes.
