Dear Doctor,
I received an unsettling CNN article from Dr. Jason Deitch, Chief Wellness
Officer of The Masters Circle. As part of the breakthrough work Dr. Deitch is
doing with Discover Wellness, he has become an expert on conditions and trends
that support or diminish health and wellness in our society.
It seems that nationwide testing has revealed that a significant part of our
drinking water has been contaminated by pharmaceuticals, probably from the
unabsorbed portion of the medications people take finding its way into our water
reserves. Trace amounts of antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and
sex hormones have been detected in drinking water coast to coast, affecting over
40 million Americans so far – for example, fifty-six drugs were found in the
Philadelphia water supply.
While the concentration of these drugs is far below the treating dosage, there
is no research to predict the safety of long-term exposure to these medications
in these combinations. Common sense suggests that these pollutants will have
some effect, but the larger challenge is that people are gradually poisoning
themselves and their neighbors by excreting the residue of these medications,
with no likelihood of any reduction in the near future. This cumulative
corruption of our drinking water may well have devastating consequences unless
some responsibility is taken to rectify the issue.
Our dependence on drug intervention as a culture had to eventually lead to this,
and now there’s a substantial bill to pay. Even water bottlers, many of whom
treat and re-package tap water, have no consistent mechanism for or regulation
about purging these toxins, and without pressure, the powers-that-be are
essentially unwilling to do anything about it, or even acknowledge it as a
possible hazard.
Every chiropractor must alert his or her patients to this travesty, and between
moving toward filtered water for our homes and expressing our outrage in a
useful, effective way, forces must be mobilized and action taken to address this
frightening dilemma. No one knows what will happen after years or decades of
ingesting minute portions of these drugs, but to me it’s more logical to handle
this matter now instead of waiting until our entire population is suffering the
impact of our indiscretions.
Sadly, the water authorities and bottlers dismiss the potential dangers, and
only public insistence is going to cause any positive movement on this problem.
Like thalidomide, Vioxx, and a whole spectrum of medications that were presumed
safe until proven otherwise, these combinations of drugs must be studied
objectively and research must be initiated on how to cleanse these waste
products from our water to reduce or eliminate human consumption, until and
unless they are certified safe by impartial scientists with no vested interest
in leaving the situation unchanged.
We chiropractors dream of a world with less reliance on outside agents like
medications, where inner factors leading to health and wellness are the prime
movers in people’s lifestyle decisions. Till then, we need to avoid the
inadvertent poisoning of our citizens by ongoing micro-exposure to chemicals
that could cause allergies, mutations, irritation to our immune systems,
metabolic disturbances and overall injury to quality of life. For now, get the
facts, and do your part to activate the prompt and thorough cleanup of this
secret pollution that could be hurting us in ways we haven’t yet measured. Step
up, ask tough questions, get clear about it, and find your role in the
resolution of this awful mess.
