Create Your Destiny
May 12, 2008

Dear Doctor,

It was a privilege and a delight to be invited to present at a student-conceived-and-orchestrated seminar at Northwestern Health Sciences University, entitled “Create Your Destiny.”

The focus of this unique gathering was chiropractic philosophy, the part of the philosophy, science and art that is sometimes underemphasized – and how refreshing it is to see our chiropractors-to-be passionate about learning the traditions and philosophical foundations of our beloved profession!

It wasn’t too long ago that an event like this might not have been welcome, on this campus or others like it, but the fact that such a program can be presented is a tribute to both the enthusiastic student leaders and the progressive administration, led by President Mark Zeigler, whose positive, modern, balanced, student-centered educational approach wins him the high grades in student satisfaction that many college presidents wish for.

Sometimes we take for granted the importance of chiropractic philosophy in our practices – whether or not we talk about it at length with our patients, most veteran practitioners have collected enough evidence to develop a practical understanding of the basis of chiropractic. We have seen the relationship between nerve interference and dis-ease, between adjustments and improved function, and we have seen the amazing healing power of the body, watching patients respond from serious problems when their subluxations and their lifestyles are corrected. It’s no less astounding today than it was the first time you observed it, but some of us may have grown a bit numb to the miraculous changes people experience when they incorporate chiropractic care into their wellness routine.

Not so these eager young healers! They were hungry for perspective on Innate Intelligence, on explanations for the anecdotes they had heard, and to pick the brains of those better versed in the underpinnings of chiropractic. In fact, after a long day of intense classes, they assembled a two-hour-plus mastermind around Masters Circle Coach Peter Lawrence, an expert in chiropractic philosophy, to head bang on the finer points – are subluxations good or bad, when does Innate Intelligence begin to function in the baby’s body, and other Green Book curiosities from chiropractic lore.

Please, let’s not forget to educate our patients about subluxation, and the far-reaching implications of correcting their and their families’ subluxations. Let’s remember to refer to the inner wisdom that runs the body in appropriately reverent tones, and just as important, let’s decide to direct our brightest and best young people into a career in chiropractic. Shelve whatever sourness you may have for some of the challenges unique to our particular period in practice, and get the long view – the wellness revolution is here, and we must have chiropractors front and center in this critical movement. Your influence can inspire and impact an entire generation of new doctors, it’s as simple as that.

Only by sharing what you know can you add to the momentum of this wave of public and professional awareness, with chiropractors contributing their part. Please keep the philosophy in chiropractic, and alert those who need to know so they can reap the rewards of acting consistently with natural law.
