Dear Doctor,
This past weekend, the Winners Circle visited Life University to conduct an
exercise known as “Skill Mills,” a derivative of an old Tony Robbins
super-learning technique that compresses many hours worth of ideas into a single
hour. Presenters are stationed around a large circle, like the numbers on a
giant clock, and groups of participants rotate around the circle, stopping at
each position for a brief, power-packed and highly relevant little chunk of
information, and then moving on to the next speaker.
Contemporary learning theory points out that we tend to remember better with
lots of beginnings and endings, rather than a longer drone of material. In this
round of Skill Mills, there were six different interactive ten-minute classes --
Purpose, Personal Growth, Practice Philosophy, Procedures, Patient Education,
and Patient Attraction, each carefully designed to educate, empower and
entertain.
The Winners Circle presenters were outstanding, performing excellently under
challenging conditions – in the Life U gym, with no microphones or
amplification, teaching students from 3-5 PM on Friday of finals week – well,
you wouldn’t think it would be the most popular thing on campus, and the school
was compelled to make it a requirement for certain classes of students to
attend, fearing that without that leverage too many would miss out on this great
opportunity.
Well, the students did show up as expected, about four hundred strong, with only
a hint of what was to come, and it was up to us to create the best experience
possible for them. We knew that if we did our work effectively, their natural
enthusiasm and chiropractic curiosity would emerge and help them engage the
process – and engage they did!
If you’re wondering about our next generation, worry no more – these students
were awesome! They were hungry, inquisitive, thoughtful, and across the board,
bright and respectful. One of the school administrators posted herself at the
exit to watch for bolters, but lo and behold, it was unnecessary – other than a
few bathroom seekers, the huge majority of the students stayed focused, paid
attention and played all out, which encouraged the presenters to raise their
game, too.
What expressions on those students’ faces, seeing what successful field
practitioners look like and sound like, with their imaginations running wild,
dreaming of their own ideal practices! They got a glimpse of what they were
studying toward, seeing how it comes together in reality, and gaining some
perspective on how what they learn in school applies to their careers, not only
academically, but practically, in the form of functions, procedures and
distinctions they will utilize daily in their practices. The school’s feedback
was great, and the presenters were exhilarated about their advanced citizenry
and the significance of their contribution to the destiny of our profession, a
legacy to be proud of.
When you inspire a chiropractic student, or guide a patient or family friend
toward chiropractic college, it’s one way we can pay it forward as
chiropractors, doing good for patients we’ll never meet, sharing what we know
with those who are or could be willing to help us to bring chiropractic to the
public. These small but meaningful acts of leadership make a difference, so
please support our schools and our profession by referring students, donating
money and becoming involved. Please invest in the future of chiropractic – it
will come back to you and to society many times over.
