Dear Doctor,
I started coaching with one of our veteran members, the extremely intelligent
and well-read Dr. Brad Dahlager of Bolingbrook IL, and he has proven to be a
never-ending source of interesting distinctions and observations. I mean, with
how many people can you discuss the research of David Hawkins?
At any rate, he sent me this pithy and relevant quote, his current favorite,
from “Notes From The Universe” by Mike Dooley.
"Be there. Go there now and never leave. Imagine that your dreams have already
come true. Live your life from that mindset; predicate your behavior on that
reality, not the illusions that now surround you. Filter every thought,
question, and answer from there. Let your focus shift, and be born again.
Because dwelling from, not upon, the space you want to inherit, is the fastest
way to change absolutely everything. See the difference?"
Whether you study Tony Robbins (act as if) or Gandhi (be the change you want to
see,) this notion permeates contemporary philosophical thought, and
misunderstanding it makes some traditionalists believe it is a humanistic or
non-spiritual perspective. I think the opposite – what could be more spiritual
than tapping into God’s bounty with certainty, positive expectancy and gratitude
in advance?
To be accurate, no one really knows if this theory is fact or fiction. But
Einstein invites us to consider one of two angles on life – one, that nothing is
a miracle, or two, that everything is. Either you believe we live in a friendly,
abundant universe or you don’t. For me, I see no downside to optimism, even
starry-eyed, borderline delusional optimism. What’s the worst that can happen,
you end up where you were going to end up anyway? At least you get to enjoy the
ride. And maybe the viewpoint does contribute to enhanced successes, and if so,
it would have been a tactical error to act otherwise.
Maxwell Maltz tells us that the mind cannot tell the difference between
something real and something vividly imagined. Recent pop psycho-spiritual
phenomenon “The Secret,” which thoroughly discusses modern thinking on the Law
of Attraction, reiterates this idea, that holding an intention in your mind
creates an energy field that draws that outcome toward you – it’s coming at us
from every direction.
So, how can we apply this, especially if it feels somewhat inauthentic or even
deceitful to imagine you are already where you want to be? First, remember that
your mindset establishes a backdrop for all your actions and behaviors, so
developing a desirable, if slightly unreal, model of the world leads to not only
more happiness, but better results. After all, we all recognize that “reality”
is a mental construct filtered through our beliefs – why pretend things are
worse than they really are? If anything, pretend they’re better, and see how
your energy changes. Once again, even if it turns out that you were wrong, you
haven’t avoided any pertinent decision-making, only seen your experience through
a lens of feeling worthy, hopeful and confident. How can that hurt?
Dwelling from, not upon, the space you want to inherit – a profound suggestion
that can shift your worldview to one conducive to outperforming your previous
best. Please consider checking it out.
