Dear Doctor:

At The Masters Circle seminar in London this past weekend, our guest speaker was Dr. Karsten Pedersen, father-in-law of TMC International Chiropractor of the Year Dr. Haavard Rognerud of Asker, Norway, and father of Haavard’s lovely wife Dr. Lisa Pedersen. Dr. Karsten’s chiropractic center in Sweden is one of the most prominent in Europe.

Dr. Pedersen is an expert practitioner and veteran instructor in Gonstead technique, and throughout his career has used his clinical excellence as a springboard to success. His focus is uncluttered – find the subluxation, adjust it with precision, and let the healing process begin. It’s a passionate and refreshing modern-day look at traditional chiropractic, and it was delightful to spend a day learning from and honoring this humble and scholarly gentleman.

His message was clear – too many chiropractors have not taken sufficient responsibility to perform the fundamentals effectively enough. After thirty years of experience in the trenches, practicing and teaching, his observation is that when a chiropractor commits to the optimal blend of philosophy, science and art, the original intention of chiropractic shines through, Innate Intelligence does the heavy lifting, and people respond, both by healing and by spreading the word.

It’s too bad that some of our colleagues have de-emphasized the value of continually learning and upgrading their technical skills. Holding yourself to a high standard in this essential aspect of practice pays major dividends, and provides a superior service to your patients and practice members.

Are you confident in your ability to deliver your finest adjustment? Profound in its simplicity, classical chiropractic care asks the doctor to analyze the spine to detect areas of nerve interference, to introduce an appropriate concussion of forces at the right place and the right time, to coach the patient on creating a supportive environment for healing, and adjust only when and where necessary.

While Dr. Pedersen prefers and advocates Gonstead, his point and his recommendation is to choose a corrective methodology that resonates with you, and commit to becoming a master at it, so that you can achieve the best results possible. Ongoing training, periodic pooling of resources in seminars and masterminds, and constant self-evaluation will help you demonstrate the hallmark of the outstanding chiropractor – good hands, head and heart, doing a lot of good for people.

Be honest in your self-appraisal, and notice what you could do to improve the quality of your care. It is a foundational cornerstone of chiropractic practice that Nature needs no help, just no interference – and it is the role of the chiropractor to find, reduce and eliminate such interference. Accept this sacred trust, and rest your head on the pillow each night knowing the significance of the contribution you are making to a sick and suffering humanity, toward the realization of our vision of a truly well world.
