Does Chiropractic Care Improve Immunity?

Dear Doctor:

Controversy and infighting have erupted around the debate – does chiropractic care improve immunity? Some PubMed articles comment on chiropractic and immune function, like asthma studies and TNF (tumor necrosis factor) research which relates T-Cell activity to spinal manipulative therapy, but there’s something we all want to know – do regular chiropractic patients suffer less risk than their unadjusted counterparts?

Investigations like this often use empirical surveys and paper review rather than randomized controlled clinical trials – I mean, evaluating patients under long-term chiropractic care in a laboratory setting would take years, and while we should certainly do it, we need quicker answers than that, even strong anecdotal evidence, to influence what is happening in our communities right now.

So, let’s find a way to calibrate the chiropractic patient’s status in the current environment, to see if we are just blowing smoke or if our patients actually do have more protection. Then we’ll be able to have the conversation we prefer with our neighbors who depend on us for advice and guidance.

I have developed a simple two-minute survey you can send to your patients. It asks for no personal information except age and general location, no email or contact info so your patients don’t have to worry about being spammed or bothered. We just want to know if they got sick or not. The survey asks if they have been exposed to COVID-19 or tested positive, did they have any symptoms, and if any family members were similarly exposed or died. It should be obvious that any chiropractic patients who passed away would not be completing the survey – but we have to start somewhere.

I tested this survey on a small group of doctors and the early returns imply a correlation between regular chiropractic and not catching coronavirus or experiencing severe symptoms, so now, please help me (and our profession of course) to collect more data. I understand why most of our political and academic leaders want to avoid overstating our case — I don’t want to make unsubstantiated claims or declarations either, but we must do something, and that’s why this project is so important.

If ten percent of you, loyal readers, would take the action step to send the link below to your patients, with a brief explanation, we can potentially hear from thousands of patients whose personal experience would then contribute to the general body of knowledge. And please take the survey yourself – you are also a chiropractic patient, and your input counts too. Plus, you can see how non-invasive the survey is, so you can reassure any squeamish patients.

I found an article about ongoing immunity if coronavirus antibodies wane, postulating that T-Cells will pick up the slack, especially if the person has had any exposure to any coronavirus in the past. If chiropractic enhances T-Cell response, that may suggest a mechanism to understand why our care enhances immune function, if it does.

Please help me help our patients and our colleagues by sending this link to your patients, with simple directions, like: “Please take this 2-minute survey on chiropractic and immunity. It asks nothing personal except age. Just click the link and answer a few questions – thank you! Here is the link:” CHIROPRACTIC AND IMMUNITY SURVEY

Let’s stand up for chiropractic – we can help people who need us, so let’s step up and validate our approach. The more proof we can offer to the health care consumer who is craving solutions, the more good we can do. This survey can move us toward that outcome. Thanks for your help.
