How To Make 2022 Your Best Year Yet: Chiropractic Practice Management

Hello everybody. And welcome to Thrive in Five. I’m Dr. Dennis Perman, and I’ll be your chiropractic coach for today. This Thrive in Five is entitled How to make 2022 Your Best Year Yet. Oh, yeah, I know, everybody says that. Right? Well, the only way for you to make 2022 your best year yet is for you to make 2022 to your best year yet. Well, how on earth are you going to do that? Well, the first element that must go into this has to be you. It has to be your sense of self. It has to be your sense of purpose. It has to be your willingness to engage because, after all, nobody is going to hand you your best year yet. This is something you have to orchestrate and manage yourself. So let’s spend a couple of minutes talking about the statement of purpose.

Now, most people mistakenly think that a mission statement and a statement of purpose are the same thing. In my model, they are not. A mission is contextual. “I’ll be the best chiropractor in Anytown, USA. I’ll be the best husband and father. I’ll be the best wife and mother in Anytown, USA.” Once you put a context on it, it’s no longer a purpose. It’s a mission.

Purposes are global. They override all of your goals. They have to do with things like happiness and inspiration and joy and focus and self-discipline. So my purpose is to be happy and to help others be happy through positive learning experiences, good health, and entertainment. And those of you who know me can decide whether or not when I show up in my practice or my life, do I reflect that idea? I like to think that I do. And I hope you will agree. But that’s my take on it. You need to decide what your purpose is. Is it to be creative? Is it to be inspired and inspire others?

So, let me give you a basic model so that you can create a statement of purpose that will help you formulate something that you can live your life by. Your purpose is to be something and to do something. And you want to keep it from being too contextual because that makes it a mission statement. Now once you have your purpose in place, there are five sets of goals that will help you to make 2022 your best year yet. First comes personal goals. This is how you plan to eat, how you plan to meditate, how you plan to pray, how you plan to read, how you plan to show up in your life.

The next goal is your professional goals. These are the ones that most people are pretty comfortable with, where you set some statistical goals or some objectives for your practice. But it may be to run for and hold office. It may be to take on an associate doctor. It may be for you to read certain journals on a regular basis. Those are professional goals as well.

Now the next goal-setting P is your people goals. Now people goals is not goals you set for other people. It’s goals you set for yourself in the context of your relationship with other people. So, you plan to show up this way with your spouse, this way with your kids, this way with your team, this way with your associate doctors, this way with your patients.

Now the fourth goal-setting P is prosperity goals. This is where you decide, “How much am I aiming at earning? How much am I planning on saving? How much am I planning on reducing my debt? How much am I planning on donating or investing?” This is where you manage your prosperity.

And finally, you have play goals. Play goals, of course, are where you determine what kind of leisure time you’re going to take and where you also plan the finances for it. Now I refer to this system as the Six P’s. The Six P’s are purpose, personal goals, professional goals, people goals, prosperity goals, and play goals. And I don’t recommend that you write too many. I know Mark Victor Hansen recommends writing too many goals. And while I love a lot of what he says, on this point, we differ.

You can write all the goals you want. But I prefer that you bring only three goals per category up to the first page so that you don’t have too much clutter so that you have more focus, and you have more intensity around each of these goals. As you accomplish each goal, don’t cross it off. Write victory through it. Celebrate it. And then bring another goal up from your master list.

Now, can I guarantee that this is going to give you your best year yet? Well, I can’t guarantee it, but I will say this. Having had over 10,000 chiropractors through my program and sitting in this seat for 35 years, I can tell you that you’re much better off having structured goals than not having them.
