Many of our readers have commented that they can’t wait for 2020 to be over, so we can get a fresh start in 2021. You may even feel that way yourself — I surely do.
This is a reasonable position to take, given the challenges — and I consider myself an optimist – but 2021 will only be better if we make it better. Much of what made 2020 so arduous will continue on, and while we can anticipate change, it will be faster and more beneficial if we work to facilitate it.
So how can we usher in a new and improved year?
It happens inside out, like all the most important things do – begin each day with a positive morning routine, since well begun is half-won. Saying an affirmation, visualizing a great day, stilling your internal dialogue with meditation or prayer, exercise, breathing, yoga, martial arts – there are myriad tools and techniques to ensure a powerful, meaningful first step on your daily journey, and no one can do that for you. Claim your advantage by starting strong.
Next, have a goal and a plan – not to shove yourself down destiny’s throat, but to generate forward thrust. Once you are in motion, you can steer in another direction if necessary, but from a standstill, it’s hard to manifest the momentum you need to re-navigate. Plot a course, pursue it, and be flexible.
Be prepared for speed bumps, curveballs and setbacks – they are part of the process of success, and anyone who has attempted to advance their lot in life will tell you the war stories that defined their path. Don’t dread them, embrace them – they are part of becoming battle-tested, since it’s unrealistic to presume that everything will work perfectly the first time.
Raise your standards and keep raising them – good enough never is, so proceed with certainty, always aiming to make it easier, finer, more fun, more productive.
Believe in yourself, and know that you are blessed with all the assets you need to create success. And develop the winning strategies you know will take you toward your chosen objective.
This formula — raising your standards, refining your beliefs, and choosing winning strategies is not new. I learned it from Tony Robbins thirty years ago, and he distilled it from ancient wisdom. But how many of us do it? Larry Markson taught me that knowing the way is not going the way – we need to act on what we know to get the results we desire.
You’ve heard it said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, and this has been a truly insane year, as we spent much of it in recoil – if you haven’t emerged and gotten into motion, now is the time. It makes no sense to think 2021 will improve unless you commit to improving it – get in prime physical shape, eat well, tune your mind to enhance your mental function, practice the patterns of healthy emotion, and discipline yourself to stay on your spiritual path, whatever that means to you. By growing physically, chemically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, you have the best chance of making 2021 the year you dream it can be.
What did you trade 2020 in for, and what do you plan to trade 2021 in for? Only you know what’s most important to you – every big winner has lost at times, and even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Get into your optimal resource state, pick your direction, and take massive action – it’s the only thing that has ever worked, and it will work for you.
Happy New Year! Let’s make 2021 all it can be, by making ourselves all we can be!
